Having a garden and taking care of it is a fun way to kill time. Others would call this a hobby but if you don’t have time for this yet you still want to have your own garden that look like you have all the time to take care of it, you can choose the shortcut option.
Gardens need a lot of time & effort for it to look nice and probably you won’t want to spend a lot of money on equipment too. If you want to quickly and cost-effectively do your garden, you may want to go for a plastic pond that is either above or in-ground.
For above ground plastic ponds there’s the pre-formed pond. The liners for this type of pond are made of rigid plastic or of glass-fiber (reinforced) plastic. The two types of liners need support so they could withstand the pressure of the water.
If it’s an underground pond you want, there are more options for you to choose from. You can choose it to be rigid or perhaps the flexible type of pond liners. Both have their good sides and bad sides so you really have to decide which one you want.
The rigid type comes in a circular or rectangular shape and there’s nothing much you can do about it. Some offer the kidney shaped ponds but you won’t have as much freedom with it compared to the flexible type.
Also, be sure to choose the UV resistant type as the direct sunlight can be damaging to the pond. Losing the original color for the pond won’t hurt much but if the liner gets weakened and cracks form then it can leak. The same with frost resistance, not all liners are frost resistant so be sure to choose the right one.
It’s easier to work with flexible liners if you have a design you imagine for your pond as it gives you freedom. The flexible liners are usually made of polyvinyl chloride or polypropylene. The rubber is available at a slightly higher price but since PVC is not just thick but also resistant to puncture, it’s a good reason to choose this over plastic.
With these types of liners and kits for plastic ponds, all you need to do is to dig up a hole in your garden and depends on the material you choose to use to install it. An average gardener will take up a day to execute his pond and they can add the fountain, filters and pumps the next day.
If you want to put fish in your pond, you’d need more accessories. You’ll need filters and pumps also, make sure you choose the liner material that can withstand the chemicals you’d use to clean the water and free it from moss and algae.
Matching Plastic Ponds based on your Needs

The preformed type of pond liners are available for above ground ponds but even the glass fiber liners won’t be strong enough to support a few hundred gallons of water pressure but with enough support this can be solved; flexible liners won’t work for above ground ponds. Preformed pond liners are very easy to put up since it already has its shape. The gardener would need to dig a hole, place it in there and fill. You can choose the plastic or glass fiber liner for this but it’s the glass fiber that is more rigid and stronger. There are different types but make sure you look for one that is UV resistant and frost resistant as not all the in-ground ponds are resistant to UV and frost. The negative side of the preformed pond liners is because it already has its shape either circular or rectangular shaped which is not as natural looking as the flexible liner.
If it’s in ground garden ponds you are thinking of, your options are greater. You can use the flexible type or the preformed or the rigid ones but no matter what you choose, make sure it provides you with all the features you require. UV and freeze resistance with the material are available and you should choose one that is required. If you have cold winters, you need both the UV and frost resistance, if not then UV resistance is adequate.
The direct sunlight is consisted of hard UV rays and with visible spectrum that damages the material polyethylene that most ponds are made of unless they’ve been treated against this. Black materials usually can withstand the direct sunlight but it’s best to check the retailer.
The rigid liners come in circular, square and kidney shapes only. If these shapes are fine with you then you’ll be successful with this type of liner as you just need to dig a hole and put the product in and fill the gaps.
The flexible liners are much harder to work with compared to the rigid one but still not that difficult to put up. They are available in polyethylene or rubber sheets but the rubber type is the more expensive but you’ll most likely be contented with polyethylene or PVC. They are puncture protected and can withstand different weather.
If you want to completely overhaul your own garden and want to find a cheap way to do it then there’s no need to look any further. Less than a thousand dollars and a day of your time would already get you your own plastic pond.
